Larry Urbanek, Flotilla Commander

The year started off strongly with Program Visitation and Vessel Examination numbers looking good. If we continue at the current pace we will reach our goals and significantly exceed 2010.

The number of patrols is also quite strong and I hope will continue as the year progresses. One area in operations that really needs help is Radio Watchstanding. Each month it is a challenge just to cover planned patrols. The Telecommunications process is not a long one and it is an important part of operations. This is an area for those of you who do not wish to be on the water but still want to be involved in operations. Just a quick reflection on the important contribution of Betty Riddle at station FMB will attest to value of this skill. For new recruits, becoming a watchstander is an integral part of the on-the-water operation.

Public Education is another window to the public and urgently needs instructors and aides. PE plays an integral role in helping to fund our efforts and bring in new members. It is the keystone of RBS and needs more of your support.

Human Resources is perhaps the most significant activity that informs the public about the Auxiliary and steers prospects to areas where their strengths and skills can be put to the best use. We urgently need mentors and aides in this area to keep the process moving forward.

As you all know, the Auxiliary is more than just on-the-water activities. The land-based activities where we interact with the public are equally important. We can contribute to the total mission of the Coast Guard. Let’s do it now so we can continue to be Semper Paratus
