Dredging Update: Early March

A fishing and crab trap excursion on March 2nd saw the dredging equipment operating in full battle mode.

The work is creating a NEW channel, north of the old marked channel. The bearing appears to be a straight shot out of the Pass directly to the Alpha Marker rather than the gentle clockwise banana curve of the existing standing markers.

The most noticeable change is at Green #1 where the actual channel is a full 50-75 yards north of the marker itself, well outside the old channel area.

They have apparently done most of the first pass, dredging to approximately 7-feet for the entire area leaving the Pass and extending just north of the Green #1 marker.

They have, however, left a barrier shoal due west of the dredged channel and Green marker #1. The depth there is still at 2 to 3 feet for about twenty to thirty yards. This might be to prevent the current work from washing in until they go the full depth with the second dredge pass.

We took the “new” channel into the Pass and experienced the pleasure of 6-7 feet of water for the entire approach into the Pass….a welcome change from the heart-in-throat approach of recent months.

Relief is on the way. Bring the boats back home!
