Hail to the Chief: Betty Riddle

On the job at Station Fort Myers Beach

Her volunteer hours saved the taxpayers more than a million dollars over the past thirty years, but for Betty it was never about money.  She did it because she loved it and her shipmates loved her back.  The outpouring of tributes from those who served with her at CG Station Fort Myers Beach says it all:  she made a difference.

Here are a few of those messages:

“She was tough, but when you were finally qualified, there was absolutely no doubt that you knew what you were doing.”

“My fondest memories with her are: having three station assets underway on cases, auxiliary boats and aircraft running everywhere, the chart table and radio console covered in case folders, no Rescue 21, Sea Tow, Boat U.S. or Group helping out, and with her there all was humming smooth. Running the phone, operating the high sites from Everglades, Naples and Venice, keeping tabs on the A.M transmitter and guard, while working the teletype and sending message traffic, when she was there never a worry.”

“On behalf of the crew of CGC MARLIN I would like to extend thanks to Ms. Betty for the support she has shown over the years to the ever changing crew of PT. STEELE and now MARLIN. She was instrumental in tracking down dependant information to complete hurricane recall list, make sure each child had a present for the Christmas party or make sure everyone was aware of the latest gathering planned. A sincere thank you, Miss Betty, from the current Marlin staff.”

Celebrating with Betty

FC Urbanek and CWO4 Kerner enjoy a light moment with Betty at the Flotilla 96 celebration on Feb. 16.

Betty’s shipmates from CG Station FMB line the walls at Flotilla 96’s tribute to their long-time member.

“My girls,” Betty affectionately called SN Chani Splawn and SN Victoria Ryan, who came bearing flowers.

SN Kyle McBride, youngest of the Station FMB visitors, presents a special plaque.

Newly appointed an Honorary Chief in the United States Coast Guard by Admiral R. J. Papp, Jr., Betty holds her certificate as she receives her chief’s collar pins from Pete Louzao, former commanding officer of Station FMB and EPO Rodolfo Moreira, chief engineering officer at the station.

Time to cut the cake.
