John Gaston, Flotilla Vice Commander (elect)

I spent a significant amount of time developing areas of emphasis for 2012 and came up with the following goals:
·         Improve flotilla readiness for operations
·         Increase safety awareness and emergency response capabilities
·         Enhance the visibility and professionalism of the flotilla
·         Don’t forget to make it fun!
I completed both the online and classroom Flotilla Leadership Courses and found that classroom interaction with Division and District Staff Officers added to the value of the learning experience.  The internet is a good learning tool but it is no substitute for the face-to-face contact that is important to any organization.

The new Crew and Coxswain Training Syllabus developed by Dave Shuster is in the early stages of implementation in our Flotilla. As a new coxswain and training mentor, I find it useful and complementary to the Core and Coxswain Qualification Guides. It reinforces the importance of situational awareness and why it is critical to learn and thoroughly understand USCG policies and procedures when operating as a crew member or coxswain. These training methods provide the foundation for scenario-based training and safer procedures on the water. Thank you Dave!

Thanks to members of the Flotilla who encouraged and assisted me throughout my coxswain training.  To my mentor, Phill Smith, a special thanks for putting up with my phone calls and endless questions. Thanks to our Flotilla Commander and Flotilla Vice Commander for enabling me to accomplish so much during the summer months. You and many other flotilla members with whom I served as crew over the past two years taught me the real meaning of teamwork. Thanks for your help and thanks for serving your country.
