Spending on Wiggins Pass Project Approved

Collier County Commissioners voted unanimously on June 14 to spend up to $177,000 to keep alive a project to straighten Wiggins Pass, according to the Naples Daily News.  The money would enable engineers “to continue work to get a permit for the job from the state Department of Environmental Protection,” Eric Staats reported.

The project could cost up to $5 million and some of the Commissioners are not convinced that it would solve the problem over the long term. Chairman Fred Coyle has said he favors building jetties or groins to stop erosion, a method unlikely to win approval from the state because of environmental concerns
