Jim Mayer, FSO-Member Training

Members interested in boat crew training should look for this summer’s announcements regarding watchstander training.  These skills are necessary for participation in the boat crew program.

On July 13, we will begin holding operations meetings for coxswain, crew and members interested in these qualifications.  Meetings will take place every other month and are meant to enhance on-water skills.  The agenda for July includes fundamentals of radio communication, new line-handling commands (we are going to copy the Coast Guard), and review of basic procedures and policy.

Two QE exercises are tentatively scheduled for August---Monday, August 15 and Monday, August 22.  Currently, six members are planning to get certified or re-certified.   Member training classes on the horizon are scenario-based-training (How should patrols respond to a Mayday?), Advanced Team Coordination Training (one step beyond the basic TCT class), and workshops on boat crew fundamentals----as a flotilla, we’re falling short in a few areas.
