Larry Urbanek, Flotilla Commander

One third of 2011 is behind us and many of our members have returned or will soon return north. Activities at 96 will trail off in some areas but can pick up at a moment’s notice. As we approach the storm season in southwest Florida, now is the time to prepare for the events we all dread, hurricanes and tornadoes.

The first step is to ensure that we have any important documents in a secure place. The recent storms that went through the states to the immediate north of us are a sad reminder of how serious the situation can become. In addition to safe-guarding important documents, we need to be sure that our contact information is up-to-date. In the event of a severe storm, we need to ascertain the safety of all our members and those living with them. Please update your phone numbers and email addresses by submitting a 7028 “change of member info” form.

Those of us who are year-round residents should make sure that we have a set of ODUs, any necessary equipment and our member ID always ready. If we have a call-out, we will need these to regain access to the area we have evacuated. In the case of a serious event, we will be called upon to verify the ATONs in our AOR very quickly. This could be just the beginning of many activities immediately following an event.

Having your contact information up-to-date is just another part of being Semper Paratus.
