George Stancil, Marine Safety

Some flare facts:
Florida boaters generate over 500,000 out-of-date flares annually.
Flares are hazardous waste due to reactivity and toxic metals.
Soaking flares in water is not a good disposal option as some flares react when exposed to water.
It is against the law to ignite flares in non-emergency situations on regulated waters.

For flare disposal, call Southwest Squad of the Florida State Fire Marshall Explosive Ordinance unit at 239-338-2327 in Fort Myers.

For disposal of used oil, call 1-800-741-4DEP to locate the nearest public oil collection center.

For other hazardous waste, such as old gasoline, used batteries and bilge pump switches that contain mercury, contact Collier County Pollution Control Department at 239-732-2502.

Always be careful on the water.
